A portion of the Beltline behind City Hall East

I was talking to a guy who owns a few buildings around Atlanta a few weeks back and when I asked him about the Beltline, he said: “Why don’t they just open it up right now? You know, just throw down some gravel temporarily and allow hikers and bikers and curious types to explore it. Later on we can build it out the way we want but let’s start using the Beltline.”

I thought his idea was brilliant. I am sooo curious about the Beltline. Curious enough to try to bike it one day, and whoa that didn’t go so well.

Walking it is probably a better idea, and so I plan to join the folks at Urban Hiking Atlanta on July 11 for a Beltline walk. According to the blog, Angel Poventud, Mr. Man-About-Atlanta, will be leading the walk. I say let’s get to know this circuit that we’ve spent so much time talking about.

  2. Our ‘running’ group has done most of this many times before and you will find it very interesting and will meet many new people who have no addresses but are very friendly. We totally enjoy and hope they never pave it!!! Lots of walking room – soemtimes surface is rough but hey – we walk through streams and so forth anyway – so, not problem. Hope you newbies enjoy!

  4. Yeah I must admit I liked the challenge of actually ‘mountain biking’ the trail on Sunday (see most recent post). But I do believe it will be paved someday and I think if I’m purely looking to get from A to B, and not just exercise, I will appreciate a paved path.

The coolest part is really this sense of seeing the city from a different perspective. Like peeking in on the city from behind its back.
