Atlanta Unfiltered: MARTA sales tax down til 2017

More bad financial news about MARTA this week by way of Atlanta Unfiltered, a cool blog that uncovers dirt by following the money trail and asking the right questions.

Atlanta Unfiltered writes that sales tax revenue will likely fall from a high of $342.6 million in FY2008 to $277 million in FY2011. The blog further quotes Rajeev Dhawan, director of the Economic Forecasting Center at Georgia State University, who says it could take six more years for collections to climb back to the 2008 level.

So what are we going to do about it?

AU reports that MARTA is in the process of hiring a public relations firm to lobby politicians during the next state legislative session in January.

MARTA needs to do whatever it takes to stop being the punching bag for state and local politicians.

But that’s a pretty tall order. Because MARTA is something “other people” take. That’s the sense I get from just about everyone in this city.
