Nudge, Nudge — Monty Python turns 40

Today, the Beatles of comedy turns 40. The following sketch qualifies as the “I Wanna Hold Your Hand” of Monty Python:

This version of “Nudge Nudge Wink Wink” (officlally known as “Candid Photography”) was shot live at the Hollywood Bowl in 1981, which is why the brilliant Terry Jones says his wife is from Glendale — rather than the English town of Purley, which is what he says on the TV versions shot much earlier in a studio in London. The last word (“like”) is cut off here, but I still think it’s the best version.

Please tell me, what’s your favorite Monty Python skit? Which is your “Yellow Submarine,” your “Help,” your “Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds” of the greatest comedy group of all time?

  4. OK. Dead Parrot is popular (on the Facebook comments as well). But, c’mon, isn’t the Canadian Lumberjack (which follows from Dead Parrot) funnier? And what about Department of Funny Walks? And Argument Clinic?

  6. These are all very funny. The Lumberjack sketch was very popular in Canada, where I grew up, and nobody does physical comedy to match John Cleese in Funny Walks. I also vote for the Piranha Brothers: “Doug was a terror. He used sarcasm”, and the immortal Spanish Inquisition.
