Norwood’s appeal goes beyond white electorate
I have to tip my hat again to Terminal Station, which has posted an interesting analysis of the latest Insider Advantage poll on the Atlanta mayoral race. (See the jump for info on the photo).
According to Ben’s analysis, frontrunner Mary Norwood is “pulling more black support than either black candidate.”
You can find his complete post here.
As much as race is a factor, I’ve long thought that it’s also an easy method to explain away elections that doesn’t always reflect what’s happening on the ground.
For example, I’m white but I did not naturally gravitate toward Norwood, who’s also white, possibly because I’m no Buckhead housewife! I certainly have never thought, ‘Oh I’m definitely voting for her.’ Or, ‘I’m obviously voting for her.’
To be honest, Lisa Borders was the candidate that appealed to me more. (I’m still on the fence).
By the same token, I think there must be black voters who are supporting Mary Norwood, and the IA poll seems to reflect that.
Afterall, we are complex human beings, no? Surely everything is not as simple as ‘I’m white, she’s white, and therefore we see eye to eye.’
As always, I’d love to hear your thoughts.
On a fairly unrelated note, I have to say that Lisa Borders had an ENORMOUS presence at the Pride Parade on Sunday. All three major candidates were in the parade, but Lisa had a car, an army of supporters and the huge billboard on the back of a truck that you see in the photo above.
I’m sure that I looked away at the wrong moment, but I did not see Kasim Reed or Mary Norwood in person. Did anyone see them?

Yes, Kasim and Mary were both in the parade. I saw Kasim speaking w his T-shirted supporters as floats were staging at Ivan Allen and W. Peachtree. As Mary’s team rounded Ivan Allen to Peachtree, she was cheered by a few City Public Works staff and their families (!)–all African American–who asked to take their picture with her.
Okay thanks, Inky Stinky. I couldn’t believe that they would not be there. I was standing near the end of the parade and perhaps they got waylayed or I just simply did not see them.
Tell me what you're thinking...
