Even Phoenix, Ariz. has light rail

Maria Saporta reports on a delegation of Atlanta leaders who visited Phoenix, Ariz. recently as part of a regular outreach series of trips to other cities organized by the Atlanta Regional Commission.

And she tells us and shows us that yes, even Phoenix, Ariz., — yes THAT Arizona! — has a light rail system. You can read her piece here at SaportaReport.

What’s significant is that the light rail links university campuses in downtown Phoenix and downtown Tempe.

Running to stand still. Feels that way sometimes, despite recent legislative wins.

  2. Forget light rail? ATL has rail… heavy rail! We need to work on expanding what we have and stop trying to be like cities that don’t compare to us. Charlotte, Phoenix, Seattle… all nice cities but not on the level of ATL. They don’t have the traffic we do or the amout of people we have to move… which is why they can use “light” rail. To move the “light” amount of people they have. We need heavy rail so that we can stay in the ranks of New York, Chicago, Miami, and Boston.

  6. To say we only need heavy rail is missing the point – we need all kinds of transportation options, not just heavy rail! Does MARTA need to be extended? Yes. But there are plenty of routes where light rail would be more appropriate (not to mention economical). And the city certainly needs to streetcars to go where MARTA rail does not (Marietta St and Ponce corridors anyone?). Bring on the rail!

  8. I think there’s room for a diversity of transit types in Atlanta that includes light rail or bus rapid transit. I’d love to see a line that goes east on Auburn from Downtown to the King Memorial and points in between. And maybe up to the West Midtown area too.

I appreciate the heavy rail that we have here, but it is forbiddingly expensive to build extensions to it right now and probably will remain so for a while. Rather than waiting for heavy-rail costs to be more affordable for us, I think it would be good to go ahead with less expensive, short transit lines that are more financially feasible.

  11. Thanks for posting, Piedmont. I had heard talk about this but the article in the Marietta Daily Journal really lays out the plans.

It’s no small investment but I think light rail or streetcars could benefit so many areas of Atlanta, not just downtown.

I used to live not far from Cumberland Mall and it’s just such a traffic and streetscape nightmare. Meanwhile it’s really an important transportation hub, in terms of buses, for the county. You can see all the people waiting at the sheltars at the mall — there’s a need for more transit there.
