Your weekend away: the Beltline’s Southwest side

Please don’t tell me you have Beltline fatigue, kind readers, because I’ve finally made it over to the temporary trails on the West and Southwest side and I’m eager to sell you a travel package on it!
Of course all you have to do is bike across town, or take MARTA to the Ashby station. From there, it’s an easy half-mile ride to the start of the temporary wooded trail. And once there, you really won’t believe you’re still in the city.
I’ve covered this territory already, having walked part of this trail a year ago. But now, instead of a three-hour walk, you can take an hour-long bike ride (or less, depending on how far you go).
Just as on the Northeast side, which I’ve covered quite a bit, there is art to see. How about this piece?

It’s like a little chapel in the woods.
There’s also this piece, posing gamely next to the Mayor of the Beltline, Angel Poventud.
As I’ve said in previous posts, you need a sturdy mountain bike on these temporary trails. Angel was riding on a hybrid but the man lives on his bike so I’m not sure the rest of us would be able to hack it (Have I mentioned he’s running for mayor?). There are also spots where the mosquitoes are quite friendly.
But you’ll have the trail to yourself, and it’ll be easier than strapping the bike onto the car for a mountain bike ride in North Georgia or the Silver Comet Trail, or whathaveyou.
If you want to see your city in a new way, get out there Atlanta. It’s waiting for you!

Looks interesting. I biked the SW and SE section yesterday from Metropolitan Ave. to the Krog St. tunnel. Did I miss these temporary trails? I rode along side the railroad tracks, and it seemed like nobody has hiked or biked this section of the Beltline (a little creepy going under the 75/85 overpass). The bridge over Ponce has been patched with some plywood to get across–the bridge over Metropolitan has not. Regardless, it was very cool, and I saw some some great sights, an old tunnel, and some hidden scenes!
Hey Chris,
If you started your ride at Metropolitan Ave, you started at the southern end of the temporary trails in SW. All you need to do is head north up Allene Ave about a half mile from where you were and you’ll notice a path off to the left just before you get to Catherine St in Adair Park. You’ll ride on that flat without crossing a single street all the way to Washington Park, about 4 milesish.

Have a great day and thanks Jeanne for coming along for the ride. Anytime.
Great news…I’ll be riding it this weekend picts to come
Cool. Is there a way to post pics to a comment? I took some pics of the SE/SW side this past weekend.
Probably not, I was going to paste them on my FB page.
Hey Chris and DeAngelo,
You could probably provide a link to the pictures here in the comment section. Something like a flickr link or something like that so that people could check out the pictures that way.
Just a thought. Have a great day
Oh it works! Angel is right. I meant to comment earlier. If you have a Flickr account (or probably any other photo sharing system), you can grab the HTML code and paste it in the comment box. That’s what I did in the comment above.
Please please share your photos Chris!
Oh, right, duh! Forgot about that. Embedded photos. Will post soon!
Cool I’ll try that after my ride
Nice ride but a lot of over grown areas on the trail, I guess no budget for up keep yet huh?
You’re right — it is fairly overgrown — definitely more so than the trail that goes from Memorial to Piedmont Park. I’m not really sure why that is. On the other hand, I really feel like I’m in a forest!
Do you have any pics to share?
Yes I need to download flickr or you can go to my FB page…. Atlanta Allday Everyday…
Yes the ride did make you feel like you were in the forest…What was real cool though was that you didn’t have to cross 1 street. Going under the bridges was kinda scary though…a lot of homeless.

Ignore that last post. Trying to embed photo–can’t remember which code to use : P
Testing…
Along the SW/SE corridor:
Sorry, I give up. I tried to embed with Flickr code, but with no success. it’s just blank…
DeAngelo, your photos are great! Thanks for sharing. I really like the closeup of the tunnel.
Chris sorry you’re having trouble. All I did on Flickr, was click on ’share’ and then ‘grab HTML’ and then I pasted the code into this box. Thanks for trying!
Alright, I did it the old fashioned way. Here is a link to my photos from the SE/SW corridor:

I promise I have a job aside from trying to embed photos. If you all have a way of deleting all of my useless comments, go for it.
Tell me what you're thinking...
and oh, if you want a pic to show with your comment, go get a gravatar!
