Flood records fell following this fall’s frightening rainfall, according a press release just sent out by the Atlanta Regional Commission’s Grace Trimble. Check out the numbers gathered up by the ARC from federal gauge keepers:

* Sweetwater Creek at Austell crested Tuesday at 30.2 feet. This is preliminary data, as the flood waters destroyed the gauge.  The previous record was 21.8 feet, recorded July 12, 2005 during Hurricane Dennis.

* Chattahoochee River near Whitesburg crested this morning at 29.8 feet. The previous record was 29.11 feet in 1919, more than 50 years before Lake Lanier reached full pool.

* Yellow River near Conyers below Milstead Avenue crested yesterday evening at 22.5 feet. The previous record was 16.4 feet on July 8, 2005.

Yes. I know we had a big rain. But does anyone really doubt that the severity of the flowing was caused by rapid runoff from poorly planned development?
