Are you enjoying the wit, eloquence and erudition of Atlanta Unsheltered? Well, you can have some of that fine stuff for your own … for a fee.
That’s right. Blogs are fun. But freelance research, writing and editing pays most of the bills.
With more than 30 years experience as a writer and an editor — the last 11 as the top editor at Georgia’s second most popular newspaper — Ken Edelstein has acquired a wide variety of skills that can be applied to editorial, design and marketing projects. He’s won awards for business, political, investigative and environmental writing, and he’s edited more than 30 award-winning stories, ranging from food and movie reviews, to feature stories and political columns.
In addition to writing and editing on such topics as business, natural resources, politics, policy, and Atlanta and Georgia, his top areas of expertise include designing all manner of print products that incorporate artwork, photography, info-graphics and writing, as well as websites and online publications. If the job requires additional skills and manpower, he’s particularly adept at getting people to work toward a common goal.
Recently, Ken debuted a new area of business — marketing special events — with his marketing, PR and advertising campaign for the Candler Park Fall Fest. It incorporated print and broadcast advertising, online content, social media, and radio and television appearances. Among other unpaid media attention, the campaign generated at least two radio stories, a television story, a section-leading feature story in the Atlanta Journal Constitution, numerous blog articles, event listings in all major publication, and Twitter buzz about at least two of the festivals features. Ken also used his in-depth community connections to coax the city’s four mayoral front-runners to appear offer informal “proclamations” at the neighborhood festival — a program he conceived of and executed. The proclamations alone gained media attention. Bottom line: Despite a cloudy weekend, the annual event enjoyed record turnout.
Jeanne Bonner also is an accomplished writer and editor, whose won awards for business reporting in Pennsylvania and since moving back to Atlanta in 2008 has gained particular expertise in the city’s planning and transportation issues. In addition, Jeanne translates Italian.
Silvia Medrano brings additional skills to Atlanta Unsheltered. A chef trained in Chicago and Hawaii by a James Beard Award-winning mentor, she also holds a degrees from the University of Illinois. She’s consulted for restaurants’ marketing efforts, and she’s designed menus, displays and internal operating documents. Among other projects, she was the lead author of a training manual for Roy’s, a worldwide group of upscale restuarants owned by Outback Steakhouse.
